Ever since I was young, I knew I wanted to become a teacher. Now, having completed my degree in Middle Childhood-Early Adolescence Education, I am more than excited to teach children to become life-long learners and to continue learning about the field of education and children through experiences substitute teaching and becoming a classroom teacher. St. Norbert College has opened up many experiences to me as I have been able to complete my student teaching practicum at Wrightstown Middle School and Swanson Primary School. At Wrightstown Middle School, I taught 8th grade Mathematics for ten weeks. We used CPM's group-work model and I facilitated mathematical discourse among the students. In addition, I taught the 8th grade accelerated course where students were working to complete an Algebra course. At Swanson Primary School in New Zealand, I was able to teach 7-9 year olds for eight weeks. With a free-play recess and approach to teaching, the New Zealand School system taught me how capable students are to be independent learners and learn from play. St. Norbert College has also provided me with ample opportunities to preform community service --from the Michels Hall Service Program to T.R.I.P.S. (Turning Responsibility Into Powerful Service) and many more. Through Michels Hall Service Program, my seven roommates and I volunteered at the YWCA in Green Bay at their after-school program for two semesters. We provided snack, helped with homework, and played games with the kids. Through T.R.I.P.S., I was able to serve at the Academy of St. Benedict the African in Chicago where I helped a 2nd grade classroom and after-school program. Further, I was able to co-lead another trip to Lebonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis, TN. Our ten volunteers cared for children, did arts and crafts with patients, and put on game shows for families. With a combination of my experiences student teaching and community service, I believe the classroom environment I will be able to foster will be welcoming, understanding, hands-on, and engaging.
